What Is This Contest?

I haven't hosted a contest in a long while, so I thought long and hard about what theme I wanted. I could go with the obvious, or I could do something else. I chose the latter. The theme I decided upon is Diabetes Awareness.

Diabetes affects 9.3% of the America's population... Imagine how many are affected throughout the world. A good portion of these people who are affected, go on undiagnosed. It is the seventh leading cause of death in America. There is no cure, though it is controllable under the right circumstances.

I am newly diagnosed with the disease, and it is very frightening at first, especially if you are going through it alone for the most part like I am. I have had to change so much of my lifestyle, from what I eat to how I take care of my feet, how I exercise, I have to stab my finger constantly to get a glucose reading and carry snacks around in my purse in case my sugar is low. It hasn't been easy. The scariest part, I think, is knowing how many complications can arise if this is left alone... I could die from any number of things or lose body parts, a lot easier than someone who is normal. So my task is grand, indeed, to take care of myself and get better before this controls me.

Because of all of this, I would like for this contest to happen to help raise awareness and possibly help those who aren't as lucky as I am, to be able to get testing supplies, as well as be able to live a better quality life (i.e. learn how to eat and live healthier). So many people go through this without a clue as to how to work with it, and so many people die without even knowing they have the disease. Just entering this contest and putting the link to the American Diabetes association would help, even if you cannot donate money! And if you don't want to enter this contest but still want to help? Simply put a link to www.diabetes.org somewhere where lots of people can see it! Word of mouth can go very far, these days.
